Tutoring has long been viewed as an effective way for students to get additional help outside of the classroom. However, with the rise and development of technology, students now have the option to choose between in-person and online tutoring. While both approaches have their benefits, they also have their drawbacks, and students should consider their individual needs and preferences when deciding which to pursue.
Students' Focus
One of the primary benefits of in-person tutoring is the opportunity for face-to-face interaction between the tutor and the student. This allows for a more personal and interactive learning experience, as the tutor can observe the student's body language and facial expressions as well as adapt their teaching approach accordingly. The in person learning session will be more engaging for students who in turn will enjoy learning more. This is especially true for elementary students, who typically have a shorter attention span. The teacher can quickly bring the students' attention back through the use of visual aids and activities that would otherwise be difficult to do.
Flexibility and Accessibility
On the other hand, online tutoring offers several advantages over in-person tutoring, specifically flexibility and accessibility. Online tutoring allows students to receive help from a tutor from anywhere in the world, at any time of the day or night. This can be especially useful for students who have busy schedules or live in remote areas without access to traditional tutoring services. Online tutoring can also be more affordable than in-person tutoring, as there are no additional costs associated with travel or meeting in person.
Learning Resources
Another advantage of online tutoring is the ability to use digital resources to enhance the learning experience. This incudes video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and online whiteboards. These tools can help make learning more engaging and interactive, and can enhance collaboration between the tutor and the student.
However, online tutoring does have some potential drawbacks.
Both in-person and online tutoring have their pros and cons, and parents should carefully consider their child's needs and preferences when deciding which one to pursue. While in-person tutoring offers the benefit of face-to-face interaction and hands-on learning, online tutoring is more flexible, accessible, and affordable, and can offer a wide range of digital tools and resources to enhance the learning experience. Ultimately, the decision between the two approaches will depend on the student's individual learning style, schedule, and budget.
We do offer both in-person and online tutoring services and for a brief period were an online-only center during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on our past teaching experience, we typically don't recommend online tutoring to students under grade 6 as they do need physical interaction with the teacher to keep them focused and engaged.
